Ray Wilson - CEO, Carbon Neutral

Ray WilsonBusinesses and Environmental Sustainability: It's a No Brainer

We're well behind Europe, but more and more Australian companies are realising that managing their environmental footprint is having a positive impact on their bottom line.

That may come from reduced energy, water or waste. Or it may be higher staff retention and more motivated staff as most people prefer to work for an organisation that is doing the right thing. Or it may be increased sales opportunities by meeting procurement requirements increasingly being imposed on the supply chain by environmentally responsible buyers.

And for those laggard public listed companies who've resisted managing sustainability, the ASX has stepped in and requires all listed company's to publicly disclose their non-financial or sustainability risks (economic, environmental and social) and how it manages or intends to manage those risks.

Investors are looking for greater transparency in the management of the impacts of climate change, supply-chain disruption risks, employee safety and health, access to adequate energy and water supply, physical environments and Corporate Social Responsibility. Read: 'social licence to operate'.

And guess what? This is being done outside of any federal government legislation. It will be corporate Australia that takes the lead . The big accounting firms are getting involved with advice on sustainability strategies. Three banks - Westpac, ANZ and CBA are internationally rated in the Top 100 sustainable companies. Stockland and Wesfarmers are also there. Carbon Neutral has hundreds of SME's and family company clients who are quietly managing their environment footprint. Many Local Councils across the country are implementing Climate Change Adaption Plans and Greenhouse Action Plans with carbon neutrality targets.

They're doing this because taking action is good for business and good for the environment. It's a no brainer.
