Flavia Pardini, Perth Green Drinks

Flavia PardiniFlavia Pardini is the organiser of Perth Green Drinks, a networking group that promotes bimonthly events in Perth for sustainability enthusiasts.

Green Drinks aims at gathering people of all backgrounds with a common interest, the environment. It started in London in 1989, with just a few people meeting to exchange ideas at a pub. Nowadays Green Drinks events happen in more than 700 cities around the globe.

Founded by Wilma van Boxtel in 2007, Perth Green Drinks has been growing fast and is establishing itself as the premier forum for the public debate of sustainability issues in Western Australia. Each meeting is centered on one specific topic, with three panelists and the opportunity for the audience to ask questions. The best part, however, is the networking time after the panel, with drinks and conversation on new ideas and possibilities.

Central Institute of Technology and Little Creatures Brewing currently sponsor Perth Green Drinks. Organisers and speakers volunteer their time and expertise. Around 150 people come to each Perth Green Drinks event and keep the discussion vibrant.

Spreading ideas and discussing the most pressing issues relating to sustainability has been Flavia’s main occupation for more than a decade. A journalist by training, she has been reporting on environmental issues for publications back in her home country of Brazil since 2000.

In 2005, in partnership with another journalist, she started Página 22, the first monthly magazine dedicated to sustainability in Brazil.

Writing for the magazine, she had the opportunity to learn about important environmental issues and to interview, among others, Gro Bruntland, Herman Daly, Martin Rees, David Cook (The Natural Step), Peter Singer, Janine Benyus (Biomimicry Institute), Ernst Ligteringen (Global Reporting Initiative), Paul Gilding, Peter Victor (Managing Without Growth), Mike Hulme (University of East Anglia).

Flavia moved to Australia in 2007. Today she is involved in a couple of nascent organizations focusing on community and the environment in the Town Victoria Park.
